WHICH SUBSTANCES SHOULD NATURAL COSMETICS AVOID?

At Labeau, we believe that the best way to care for your skin is to provide it with natural nutrients that promote regeneration and natural balance.

That's why we want to show you which ingredients Labeau avoids in its cosmetics.

- Mineral oils derived from petroleum: Such as, for example, the silicones found in some hair and lip products. They form a film on the skin and hair that can clog pores.

- SULPHATES (SLS AND SLES): These are found especially in shampoos, shower gels and other body cleansing products. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) can be irritating to the skin and its use is restricted in concentration. Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) is less irritating but may also contain traces of 1,4 dioxane which is considered carcinogenic.

- PHENOL & PHENYL substances: Used as preservatives in the cosmetics industry. Highly irritating substances such as Nitrophenol, phenolphthalein or chlorophenol ("Triclosan"), Phenylenediaminesulfate or N-Phenyl, P-Phenylenediamine are restricted to certain dosages.

- ETOXYLATED COMPOUNDS: They act as emulsifiers, surfactants or solubilisers and their main risk lies in traces of 1-4 Dioxane as well as SLES. You can recognise them by the following names: PEG- (polyethylene glycol), Polysorbate- (20, 30, 80,...), and all ingredients ending in -eth like Ceteareth-X, Laureth-X, Steareth-X,...).
CONSERVANTS: there are different groups of preservatives and we will focus on the most aggressive ones.
- Triclosan, 5-Chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol: can be conceived as an endocrine disruptor and leaves our skin devoid of a natural barrier. Its use is restricted, but not banned.

- Parabens: currently only short-chain parabens are used as long-chain parabens are considered endocrine disruptors due to their oestrogenic action. Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, Propylparaben.

- Formaldehyde releasers: DMDM hydantoin, Diazolidinylurea, Imidazolidinylurea, Quaternium-15 may release formaldehyde in small doses. Formaldehyde is considered carcinogenic in humans, can cause asthma and is neurotoxic to embryonic development.

- Isothiazolinones: cause an increase in allergic reactions and eczema due to their cumulative effect. Its use is limited, but not banned. Methylisothiazolinone (MIT), Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCIT) and Benzisothiazolinone (BIT).

- Phenoxyethanol: bactericide and paraben substitute that is harmful in large doses to the blood and liver. It is also toxic to the brain and nervous system and irritating to eyes and skin. It is limited to 1% concentration.

- Halogenorganic compounds: potent bactericides and antifungals but can cause allergies and can act as co-activators of factors that modulate the activity of estrogen and androgen receptors. They are highly polluting because they are not biodegradable. They can be found as: Aluminium Chlorohydrate, Iodopropynyl, Chlorophenol (Triclosan), ...

- Antioxidants: BHA (Butylhydroxyanisole) has been classified as "probably carcinogenic in humans" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It may cause skin depigmentation, liver damage, as well as interfere with the development of the reproductive system and alter thyroid function.
